Mike Mignola is an American comic book writer, artist, and screenwriter, born in 1960. He is best known as the creator of Hellboy, a major work of contemporary comics that has had a lasting impact on the fantasy and horror genres.

Mignola began his career at Marvel and DC Comics, where he worked on iconic characters such as Batman, Superman, and Wolverine. However, it was by moving away from traditional superhero conventions that he found his true artistic identity. In 1994, he created Hellboy, a demon summoned to Earth during World War II, raised by humans, and who later becomes a paranormal investigator.

His artistic style is instantly recognizable: strong contrasts between black and white, heavy use of shadow, minimal line work, and compositions inspired by Gothic architecture and German Expressionism. This minimalist aesthetic greatly enhances the mysterious and unsettling atmosphere of his stories.

Narratively, Mike Mignola draws heavily from mythology, European folklore, Norse legends, Lovecraftian literature, and occult tales. He blends horror and fantasy with subtle humor, often conveyed through short, effective dialogue.

Over the years, he has focused more on writing, leaving the artwork to other artists while continuing to oversee and expand the Hellboy universe. Today, his influence is considerable, not only in comics but also in film and illustration.
